Low Power Wide Area Networks

For applications with low data consumption.

NarrowBand IoT (NB-IoT) and LTE-M (LTE Cat M1) belong to the Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWAN) and are ideal for applications with low data consumption. Low energy consumption and high penetration and range make them unique technologies.

To keep power consumption as low as possible, three different power saving functions are used: PSM (Power Saving Mode), LP TAU (Long Periodic TAU) and eDRX (Extended Discontinuous Reception). In combination with these three functions, maximum energy savings and battery life can be achieved.

What is LTE-M?

LTE-M (or LTE Cat M1) combines the advantages of LTE and NB-IoT.

LTE-M enables networked mobility and can maintain connectivity even when the device traverses multiple mobile cells. NB-IoT, on the other hand, is only suitable for stationary applications and has to re-dial each time it moves between mobile cells.

LTE-M enables applications that cannot be ideally realised with NB-IoT. LTE-M is particularly ideal for use cases in the areas of wearables, e-health or smart tracking.

Sometimes the solution that initially appears to be the most cost-effective is not the best one for the specific use case. Connectivity, i.e. transmission technology, is the key to a successful project and should be chosen carefully. As a supplier for the IoT infrastructure, a reliable partner is essential.
