NB-IoT was specially developed for stationary low-power sensors. It is a narrowband radio technology with a transmission bandwidth of 180 kHz to a maximum of 200 kHz and significantly lower energy consumption than GSM, UMTS or LTE standards.

NarrowBand IoT (NB-IoT) and LTE-M (LTE Cat M1) belong to the Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWAN) and are ideal for applications with low data consumption. Low energy consumption and high penetration and range make them unique technologies.

To keep power consumption as low as possible, three different power saving functions are used: PSM (Power Saving Mode), LP TAU (Long Periodic TAU) and eDRX (Extended Discontinuous Reception). In combination with these three functions, maximum energy savings and battery life can be achieved.

What is NB-IoT?

NB-IoT was specially developed for stationary low-power sensors. It is a narrowband radio technology with a transmission bandwidth of 180 kHz to a maximum of 200 kHz and significantly lower energy consumption than GSM, UMTS or LTE standards.

The high penetration enables data transmission through thick walls, such as in basements, underground garages or a duct.

The data rate is limited to a maximum of 250 kilobits per second (download and upload), but can only transmit data and is not designed for voice or SMS.

NB-IoT has low latency and is less suitable for real-time data transmission.

Sometimes the solution that initially appears to be the most cost-effective is not the best one for the specific use case. Connectivity, i.e. transmission technology, is the key to a successful project and should be chosen carefully. As a supplier for the IoT infrastructure, a reliable partner is essential.
